Measuring the Speed of Mental Processing

چکیده
At one time it was believed that thought was instantaneous and therefore attempts to measure its speed were futile. This belief was overthrown in 1850 when Herman von Helmholtz measured the speed of neural transmission and showed that nerve impulses travel at speeds that are not particularly fast (around 30 m/s or about 100 kilometers per hour). Because the physical substrate of thought is presumably based in the nervous system, Helmholtz’s measurement led people to believe that thoughts might also require a measurable amount of time to take place. With his measurement, known as the subtraction method, Helmholtz also introduced an important idea to psychological research: comparisons between carefully selected conditions might provide relatively direct measurements of otherwise inaccessible processes. Although contemporary psychologists now usually prefer a modification to the subtraction method known as the additive factors method (introduced by Ulric Neisser, Saul Sternberg and other cognitive psychologists in the 1950s and 1960s) , the subtraction method still plays a key role in brain 1

Cognitive Flexibility, Attention and Speed of Mental Processing in Opioid and Methamphetamine Addicts in Comparison with Non-Addicts
Introduction: Many studies have revealed that drug addicted individuals exhibit impaired performance on executive function tests but a few studies have been conducted on executive functions of drug addicts in Iran. To contribute to this understanding, the present study was designed to assess some domains related to executive functions including cognitive flexibility, attention and speed of men...
متن کاملThe Effect of Combined Cognitive Rehabilitation Interventions (Computer and Manual) on Improving the Information Processing Speed and Psychological Status of Women with MS
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of combined cognitive rehabilitation interventions (computer and manual) on improving the speed of information processing and improving the mental status variables (MMSE) in women with MS. This research was conducted with pre-test and post-test design with two month follow-up. Twenty two women with MS were selected by available sampling me...
متن کاملApplying Genetic Algorithm to EEG Signals for Feature Reduction in Mental Task Classification
Brain-Computer interface systems are a new mode of communication which provides a new path between brain and its surrounding by processing EEG signals measured in different mental states. Therefore, choosing suitable features is demanded for a good BCI communication. In this regard, one of the points to be considered is feature vector dimensionality. We present a method of feature reduction us...
متن کاملOn gender differences in mental rotation processing speed
a r t i c l e i n f o There is a wide consensus in the literature that gender differences can be observed in tasks measuring mental rotation ability. A possible explanation of this finding is the presence of gender differences in the processing speed of mental rotation tasks. In two studies, we investigated the dimensionality and the presence of gender differences in mental rotation processing ...
متن کاملEffect of Brain Training on Cognitive Performance in Elderly Women Diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment
Background: Cognitive impairment profoundly influences on older adults’ activities and quality of life. Therefore, optimizing and remediating age-associated cognitive decline have great importance. Objectives: To evaluate the effect of 8 weeks (3 day /week) computer based brain training on cognitive performance in old women with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Materials and Methods...
متن کاملNeuroticism, intelligence, and intra-individual variability in elementary cognitive tasks: testing the mental noise hypothesis.
Some studies show positive correlations between intraindividual variability in elementary speed measures (reflecting processing efficiency) and individual differences in neuroticism (reflecting instability in behaviour). The so-called neural noise hypothesis assumes that higher levels of noise are related both to smaller indices of processing efficiency and greater levels of neuroticism. Here, ...
